SPECIAL EDUCATION
The KF education programme for teaching children with special needs began at Hoi An Orphanage in 2003 and in 2004 we opened our first classroom. We began training some Orphanage staff in the methods of effectively teaching children with a range of abilities and disabilities. This programme continued to operate with the children achieving some excellent outcomes.
Special Education has only recently been taught in Vietnamese universities and the first students graduated in 2008. Our teachers began their careers as primary school teachers or were existing Hoi An Orphanage care staff. They were selected on their aptitude and ability to understand the more creative approach needed to bring out the best in children with disabilities.
In 2010, KF expanded its education programme into the Dien Ban district of Quang Nam Province. Since June 2010 we have operated a pilot project offering education to children with special needs who live in the surrounding communes. We have selected children to participate in the programme and have been giving on-going training, both theoretical and practical, to 3 recently graduated teachers from Da Nang's Education University Special Education Department.
We aim to provide a quality education programme for each child designed to meet their current needs and to provide them with the skills and knowledge to enable them to function as independently as possible in society. We concentrate on both education and socialisation skills. Our philosophy is to concentre on the abilities of each child, not on his or her disabilities. We work together with the families of the children to help the children reach their goals.
